Gardening effort for 2008

March 1st' 2008

The last week of February saw the first blooms of the garden. The faithful Daffodils beat all else again this year. Unfortunately the show is not as grand as last years. Wondering why? Is it the unusally early onset of Spring or is it the fact that I didn't replant them? Will never know. Will have to uproot the bulbs and redistribute them when the blooms are gone.

The buds on Grape Hyacinths are also ready to blossom any day now.

Beautiful green leaves have sprung from the tulip bulbs that I put in two containers in December. It will be the first time I am growing tulips. Hoping it is worth the effort.

Today I put in the first seeds of the season to little pots. YEAH!! Even got a little adventrous (the warm weather helped) and put some directly in the garden. The seeds that went in were Zinnia, Marigold, Daisy and Sweet Peas. Marigold, Sweet Peas were seeds from last years bloom.I also have some Sunflower seeds saved from the flowers I plucked last year.I want to see if I can grow plants from last seasons blooms. Have never done that before. Last week, I also put in 3 bulbs of Freesia. What fun to wait for the first seedling to wiggle its way out of the sand. Will update as and when that happens.

No germination of the seeds yet. Yesterday(3/10) I bought a gardenia plant from HomeDepot. Hopefully it will survive.Love the smell of its flowers. These flowers which we call we call 'Gandharaj' in Bengali brings back memory of childhood days.

Panic sets in!!!! My seeds have not germinated. Its so unusual that none of the two packets of seeds I sowed on 1st March, have not germinated. DARN!! I gave in and bought 4 Dahlia and 4 SnapDragon plants from Fred Meyer. Hopefully I will get some annual blooms from them this year :(

The dahlia's perished in the 28th March snow :(
In the meanwhile sowed seeds of pumkins, sunflowers, hollyhocks, Carnation and poppy. I hope some of it germinates and blooms this year.
On a happy note, I think, I see a few seeds germinating in the front yard flower bed. Not sure what they are yet.My guess is either they are zinnias or sunflowers. At least not all the effort has gone to vain.

Beautiful grape hyacinth flowers blooming in my pot. Will have to remember to take a picture tomorrow. Tulips have almost blossomed also.

Braved the snow (yes!! in April !!) and put the daisies in container and some in the garden that I got from Ian. Thanks Ian. Put in two orange seeds in a little pot just for the heck of it.

Tulips blooming, finally!! Very pretty too - I particularly love the black / purplish colored one. Got to know that it was called 'Queen of Night'.

27th May'2008.

Got really frustrated with the garden progress or lack of it and sowed 3 cucumber seeds. One of them is sprouted and doing really well. But it has a long way to go before producing fruit.

The snap dragons have bloomed over the memorial day weekend too as did the purple rhododendrons.
